Foundation
The Jomati Foundation is a UK registered charity (Charity No.1107524), which is primarily funded by Jomati Consultants. Jomati Consultants donates to The Jomati Foundation 5% of its annual fee income. The Jomati Foundation’s primary focus is to provide assistance in the area of legal education and access to law.

Where appropriate, it provides “seedcorn” financing to enable initiatives by other charitable organisations to progress to a stage where they can obtain financing from other funding bodies or otherwise become self-sustaining.

Projects to date

The Jomati Foundation has funded a variety of projects since its establishment including:


International Lawyers Project www.internationallawyersproject.org

This is a UK based charity (Charity No.1114502) established in 2006 to provide assistance to developing countries to develop and enhance their legal systems and to provide training to lawyers operating in these countries. The Jomati Foundation funded the first year’s cost of the International Lawyers Project’s Project Manager. Its ongoing operations are now funded by a range of major UK and US based law firms.


Bar Examination Scholarships

A range of highly qualified graduates who do not have the financial means to undertake the necessary further education to qualify as barristers. The Jomati Foundation provided significant bursaries to two well-qualified graduates to enable them to undertake their postgraduate training and to qualify as barristers.


CRAC

CRAC is a charity (Charity No.313164). It ran a programme for sixth formers primarily from ethnic minorities and other groups under represented in the legal profession to encourage them to consider a career in the legal profession. The Jomati Foundation provided 25% of the funding for the programme and was the first organisation to commit funding to the programme. The balance of the funding was subsequently provided by The College of Law, Lovells, Clifford Chance, Herbert Smith, Wragges, Linklaters, Slaughter and May, Freshfields, Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw and Allen & Overy. The Coram Family

The Coram Family is one of the UK’s oldest charities (Charity No. 312278) and has an unrivalled reputation in a range of family related issues. The Jomati Foundation is providing the financing to enable The Coram Family to establish a training programme for solicitors on supervised contact arrangements involving children. The purpose of the programme is to make solicitors more aware of the implications of and best practice involving contact arrangements between children and their parents. It is intended that the programme will be authorised by The Law Society for Continuing Professional Development purposes. Once operational, the programme will be self-funding and indeed should produce a profit for use in the Coram Family’s other family contact activities.


Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales

Jomati has provided a grant to the Bar Human Rights Committee to enable them to deliver a three day training programme to the University of Cordoba in Columbia on International Human Rights Law to support lawyers, judges and human rights defenders who are threatened and oppressed and to uphold the rule of law and internationally recognised human rights standards.


Nottingham Law School

In 2007 and 2008 The Jomati Foundation provided ten students scholarships for post graduation legal education in the UK. This scheme was run in conjunction with Nottingham Law School. The Jomati Foundation is currently considering an appropriate programme for those commencing their post graduate legal studies in 2009.


Protimos Educational Trust Lesotho Project

The Jomati Foundation has provided a grant to the Promtimos Educational Trust to assist in the initial set up funding the training and mentoring of a young Basutho lawyer in Lesotho.


Wheels For The World

The Jomati Foundation has provided a grant to Wheels For The World.  The World Health Organisation reports 20 - 30 million disabled people need wheelchairs – most of these people will have a lack of hope or of the ability to purchase one. Wheels for the World is the overseas programme of Through the Roof, restoring and distributing refurbished wheelchairs, mostly to people in Africa, giving them increased independence.


Legal Action Group - Access to Justice Audit

The Jomati Foundation has provided a grant to LAG to help fund a 12 month project interviewing ordinary people about their experiences of the law, the kind of advice they get, attitudes towards the legal process throughout the civil legal system – from citizens advice bureaux, to county court on repossession day all the way through to the Royal Courts of Justice.


Cancer Research

The Jomati Foundation provided a donation to Cancer Research to help fund its legal and patent expenses.


Special Olympics Great Britain

Established in 1978, Special Olympic Great Britain (SOGB) is part of the global Special Olympics Movement, offering opportunities to people with learning disabilities. Using sport as a tool to develop and empower people, celebrating their enthusiasm and commitment to sport regardless of their ability, and providing them a chance to demonstrate their abilities to the wider public. SOGB prides itself on being a volunteer driven organisation with a focus on grassroots community sports provision. The Jomati Foundation is providing funding to the Special Olympics Athlete Leadership Programme through 2009 and 2010.
